It was a sunny Monday when school was unexpectedly cancelled due to some reasons, so I had the day off. My parents still had work though, unfortunately. Before my parents left to work, they had told me that someone ha moved in next to us. I decided to buy some bread from the local convenience store and give it to out new neighbor as a welcome gift.
As I was about to ring the bell to the neighbor’s door, I glanced inside the house from the window nearby. There I saw something quite strange. An altar had been set up with candles and a decorative circle around it. There was also I black cat, in which I barely noticed as it blended in with the dark, which was sitting on top of the altar. I found it quite strange but decided to ignore it. I rang the bell, and my neighbor opened the door. I noticed that the neighbor had dome sort of strange looking patterns tattooed on her forehead. I broke into a cold sweat and shivers went down my spine. I had butterflies in my stomach but I managed to calm myself down and gave my neighbor the bread then left quickly. The only thing I could think of was “My neighbor is a witch!’’
That night, chanting could be heard coming from my new neighbor’s house. I peered out of my window, and saw an eerie glow coming from within. I shuddered in fear. Should I tell my parents? Who should I talk to? My mom or my dad? My train of thought was stopped as I remembered someone who I trusted a lot. My best friend, Liz. The only thing I wasn’t certain of was whether she would believe me.
The next day, I talked to Liz about it in school. At first, she didn’t believe me but when she saw the look of fear in my eyes was when she finally realized that I wasn’t joking. Now that she was convinced, we had formed a mini-witch hunting team. We mustered up our courage and made our way to the witched house. Just as we were about to knock on the door, Liz shouted, “Ana, Behind you!’’
To our relief, it wasn’t the witch, but was just her cat. It mewed loudly at that. Just as I thought in the back of my mind, “Wouldn’t the witch come to see the cat because it was mewing?’’. Just then, the door to the witch’s house opened and when she saw out horrified expressions, she led out an evil-sounding laugh. We screamed in pure terror.
“Oh no! the witch is here! Ahhhh!”
Upon hearing our screams, she cackled even louder, and dragged us into the house. At that moment, Liz and I new that we were goners.
Looking at me with sorrowful eyes, Liz said to me, “It was nice having you as my friend all these years. Now, we shall die together.”
I replied with a sad smile, “You were a wonderful friend.”
Surprisingly, the witch did not mince us up and boil us in the cauldron. She beamed brightly instead. Then, she assured us that she was not a witch, but just a lonely old lady who had come from another country, practised a different religion, and had different customs to observe. She even shared that black cats bring good luck in her religion! We were amazed by this information. After that, the “witch” served us some pastry that originated from her home country. Next, she told us some interesting stories and let us pet her cat. When we looked at the clock again, it was evening time. Our parents would be coming home from work soon! We bade the “witch” goodbye reluctantly. Gently, she said, “Don’t worry, girls. You can come again any time!” “We definitely would like to do so!” we answered in unison. Liz and I parted ways at a cross-junction.
I skipped home, feeling like a great big load had been lifted off my shoulders. I no longer had to worry about the presence of a witch near my house again! That night, listening to my newly found friend’s chanting, I drifted off into dreamland. The next day, Liz and I managed to get our parents’ permission to visit my neighbor again. During lessons, the teachers’ words seemed to just float by. I could not pay attention… Well, not when I was
